Hello! I have delivered and installed refrigerators, freezers and fridge freezers and other appliances for almost 30 years and if you ask me my opinion about buying a fridge or freezer, I would offer the following advice.
How much space is available for your fridge or freezer?
I know this sounds of course and a bit stupid, but you would be surprised at how many people get so dazzled by all the whistles and bells when they buy a new household appliance as they completely forget the basics - what will it suit?
The most common exterior dimensions of a refrigerator are 600 mm wide x 600 mm deep and the height can range from 450 mm to 2000 mm.
This is quite obvious and easy to check, perhaps a more important consideration is the internal capacity, and you should try to match this as closely as possible to your needs. (Remember to try to cool an empty space in a refrigerator is a waste of energy - just like trying to heat an empty room in a house. With this in mind, you must consider your habits, eating habits and the size of your family before choosing your choice .
Most of the information about the refrigerator can be applied to freezers, but there are some further considerations.
Freezer Capacity - This indicates the amount of food that can be frozen in 24 hours and is usually stated in kg.
Temperature - Freezing should keep food at -18C - and the optimal quick freezing temperature for food to maintain most of its nutritional value is -26C.
Type of freezers - There are two types of freezer, the traditional bread freezer, and my personal favorite, upright freezer.
I find that the freezer takes up less floor space and makes it easier to store and retrieve food.
Practically all information covered by refrigerators and freezers can be applied to the refrigerator and in most cases refrigerator freezers are the most popular and most economical choice.
Other things to think about
Energy rating - All refrigerators / freezers and refrigerators are now frozen for efficiency, from A to G (A is the most efficient and G is least effective).
Color - The white fridge / freezer is still the most popular color, but you can now easily get a silver fridge / freezer or a black fridge / freezer. And in some specialty stores, just about any color you want!
Coolants - CFC gas was the most common coolant, but it has now been banned because of the damage that causes the ozone layer when it enters the atmosphere and some of the alternatives contribute to global warming. As a result, many new refrigerators now contain natural gases, such as isobutene, which have no harmful effects on the ozone layer and do not contribute to global warming.
Disposal of refrigerator / freezer compartment
There are specialist companies that will provide refrigerators and freezers, your city council will advise you. Many older models contain CFC gases, and even more important dismissed refrigerators can be very dangerous to young children, which may get stuck inside those that lead to suffocation!
Defrosting is crucial to keeping the fridge or freezer with maximum efficiency. It may be a real character, but it is now possible to buy refrigerators and freezers that do not need to be thawed because the air is constantly circulating to prevent ice formation.
Extra worth considering
Zoned Freezers - You can now have freezers with different temperatures in different zones, to match the freezing requirements for different foods.
Ice / Water - Many models now have ice maker / dispenser and water cooler / dispenser mounted as standard.
Door alarms - It is possible to have a freezer with a door alarm mounted - to prevent the door from being left unintentionally open. I think they should be fitted as standard!
The purpose of this information is to provide you with basic knowledge to make an informed decision about the type of fridge, freezer or fridge / freezer that you need for your own personal circumstances. For this reason, I have not gone into detail in specific brands and models of refrigerators and freezers, I have other articles where I focus on specific kitchen machines based on my own knowledge and experience.
